I finally have enough energy to write my final blog! First and foremost another "Thank You!!" The support and love I felt since November has been incomparable.

Despite the wintry NY weather I got to New Orleans, LA Friday night as planned. I went straight to bed as directed by my coach. My heart beat was racing because I was there, and now it was real!

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early for a light team run to shake out the nerves and to get to know my team! We went out for breakfast and had the rest of the day to pick up our racing bibs and be tourists in the magical city that is NOLA! I loved it, from the historical antique shops, to the art, to the jazz music everywhere it was great. My first day I didn't spend much time tasting the spicy foods just to be safe for my race.

Saturday night was the Team in Training Inspirational dinner. I thought watching Rocky and Miracle were inspiring but after listening to the real motivation behind why I was running opened my eyes exponentially and I was READY TO GO! We heard from a survivor who was now walking in the half marathon as well as other stories of how people were touched by this disease. With over 400 Team and Training participants at The New Orleans Rock n' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon, collectively we raised over 1.2 million dollars!!!!! AMAZING!!

Trying to fall asleep was the hardest thing to do Saturday night, but at 4:15 when the alarm sounded I bounced out of bed called Boyfriend for some last words of wisdom and met my team for the walk to the start line.

7:00 and a brisk but tolerable 40-45 degrees we were waiting to approach the start line. Over 16,000 participants ran in this event!! Finally around 7:30am we crossed the start and my heart was beating out of my chest!! I ran with my friend Meach and new teammate, Danielle that we met. We finished our first mile in 11 minutes and 24 seconds and were pretty consistent the whole way through.

About 2 hours and 26 minutes later we were half way done! Running beside the street cars on St. Charles street, passing the cafes on Decatur, and through most of the French Quarter. We got to view the beautiful houses along St. Charles and Chartres St and passing the BEAUTIFUL St. Louis Cathedral and Mausoleum. Everything was gorgeous and and I was really able to take it all in.

We ran though Audubon Park where Drew Brees, the infamous Saint's Quarterback takes his morning jogs and through City Park where we saw Pelicans and lot of fluffy white ibis birds perched in the trees!

It seems like miles 1-17 flew by....then we started running down a road behind City Park that seemed to go on forever. There were no bands, no spectators, no trees, nothing and that is where I wanted the run to be over. However we didn't stop. I was in my most positive state of mind and nothing was getting in between me and the finish line. Also, Thank goodness for my strong running partner Meach because her ability to stay strong from miles 18-24 kept me going!

Still consistent with our 11:20 miles we kept on trucking! Mile 24 came I saw the final turn into City Park...it was here, 2.2 more miles! At mile 25 my coach began to run with me and although Mile 25-26.2 was the longest mile of my life, I DID IT.

Meach and I crossed the finish line hand in hand, in what felt like slow motion but WE DID IT! We were crying, we were laughing, and it felt like each of my feelings were on steroids. Once in a lifetime is an understatement. My mentor quickly ran up to me "You're a hero" and honestly I felt like one! I was able to push myself through 4 hours and 58 minutes of running for a great cause and I felt incredible, yet in the worst pain of my life...but thankful that I can experience that pain! I completed my goal to finish running, not walking at all and I broke 5 hours in doing so!

3 days later I still feel very sore and I'm slowly gaining more energy - I am ready to take on what life hands me - Not sure what my next goal will be but I am so proud of myself and thankful for everyone who was there for me!!

So with that, Thank you!
Respectfully yours,
Lindsay :)

Fundraising Down, Marathon To Go!

I have reached my fundraising goal for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.I could not have done this without your help and I give a sincere and wholehearted thank you!!

With only days left till my marathon I can only let you know that it has been quite the journey. Training in the cold weather and in the gym has prepared me for what I'm about to accomplish. Leaning on my friends and family, and the support of my Virtual Team in Training teammates has also helped immensely. Conference calls for nutrition, stretching techniques, marathon visualization techniques, inspirational movies (Rudy, Rocky, Miracle, etc) and lots of self discipline has physically and emotionally prepared me for Sunday.

26.2 miles ain't got nothin' on me ;)

The weather in New Orleans will be in the mid- 60s and Sunny, since the last time I checked. There is a chance of rain on Friday but hopefully that will take care of any humidity. The course is flat (woo!) with elevation peaking at a whopping 35 feet!! I've got my sneakers, TNT pinny, Nathan pouch, my power bars and sports beans all packed. My flight is tomorrow evening, pending weather! Fingers crossed.

Saturday night we have a Team in Training inspiration dinner where I will get to meet my teammates as well as survivors who will share their story of how The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has touched there lives.I will keep you posted after my race with my results. My goal is to finish running and to HAVE FUN. I can now go into my race with a HUGE feeling of accomplishment because of the support you have provided me with throughout my fundraising efforts.

Thank you and Happy Running!!!!

Lindsay Pirozzi

In case you were wondering...

Hi All!

As the days wind down, with just over a week to go...I thought you may be interested in what a Marathon trainee does the week before! My friend from High School, Rory, just completed his first marathon in Phoenix, within the past month. This was his first endurance event and he also completed it with Team in Training's support. Since finding out about his accomplishment we have been connecting, aka I'm trying to get every possible detail out of him in order to be completely prepared. So take a look at the upcoming week in the life of a marathon trainee!! Thank you again, Rory!!

Lindsay,

You're almost there...Hope you're getting excited! Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster of a week coming up. As you are tapering and exercising less, your body is in the process of repairing itself. This will undoubtedly cause various aches and pains. Don't be alarmed by these, as they are completely normal. At the same time, mentally, you're going to be up and down battling excitement, nervousness, anxiousness, fear, confidence, and about 1,000 other emotions. All I can tell you is that you're not alone, and it's completely normal.

I spent the entire week before the marathon on my couch resting up, when all I wanted to do was go outside an run. You are prepared enough, and any additional running will not make a difference for race day. You're better off resting up and keeping your mind focused on other things.

Here is a bit of advice on "the week before" preparation from a good friend of mine who has run several marathons and was kind enough to pass along to me:

With regard to this week, here’s my approach and my suggested approach:
1. HYDRATE
2. EAT
3. REST
It’s really that simple.

Starting today drink as much water as you possibly can. Try to get down 3-4 liters each day of this week. You’ll be peeing every 15 minutes earlier in the week but you’ll be saturated later in the week and your bladder will be able to handle it better. You’ll want your body to be as hydrated as possible and you’ll want to be able to absorb a lot of water on race morning … the only way to do that is to start drinking yourself silly now. (of course don’t drown yourself … really no need to consume much more than a gallon or so in a day).

Start eating a LOT … but in the right way (of course this may be a bit different for me and my extreme metabolism). BUT, the key is to eat VERY well this week. Basically try to avoid any crap that could seemingly slow you down. Avoid: grease, trans fat, sweets (including soda), creams, etc. Consume: lots of lean meats, lots of pasta (especially at lunches so you process it all), lots of vegetables, sauces, oatmeal, etc. Mainly looking for a lot of complex carbohydrates and lots of proteins … and not a whole lot else.

The key will be Thursday and Friday … you’ll want a lot of carbs those two days and nights. It’s a bit of a myth that you should pound pasta the night before the race … at that point you really need proteins more (though I always have pasta WITH it because I figure it can’t hurt).

Oh, and consume lots of salt. Put it on everything. Forget about cholesterol for this one week … you need the salt in your body (again, especially the nights before the race) to help you absorb all the water and stay hydrated. (new information to me!)

Get as much sleep as you can. Don’t stress your body more than you have to. Don’t go to the gym this week … except if you want to do a stretching session.

Follow the running plan for the week and only that. Give your muscles (all of them) the whole week to recover so you are primed for the weekend. If you workout you’ll fatigue your CORE and you will need that tip-top more than any other part of your body for the race … trust me, your core is what carries you through the last 10K. With regard to sleep, try to get to bed early on Thursday and then on Friday. The sleep you get Saturday night (which won’t be much if you’re like 95% of the population) is farrrr less important than the sleep you get on Friday night. Thursday is straight butter.

Other things to do this week:- Pack before Thursday so you don’t have much to do and can go to sleep early.
For the plane: make SURE that everything you need for the marathon itself (aside from GU) … shoes, shorts, socks, singlet, etc … are either in your carry-on or on your body. Dress comfortably for the flight.
Stretch … but nothing you wouldn’t do normally or haven’t done recently … and make sure your muscles are warm as not to strain anything at this point.
Wear your marathon running shoes when you’re just hanging out/ lounging around/ going out to meet people. Just to make sure that they are broken in and settled around your foot. Do everything you can to avoid potential blisters … do not wear flip-flops, until the race is done. You don’t want to get weird chafing on your feet. Treat your feet like gods this week – you need them.

Mainly, have fun. You don’t need to be home, alone, bored and asleep at 7pm every day or anything. Not bad to throw in a bunch of movies this week, though … I always tend to watch: Rocky, Miracle, Hoosiers and maybe others in the week leading up. Figure it can’t hurt. I make my play list for race morning, too. Something to listen to early in the morning before the race and while killing time before the run. I do not run the race with headphones, though … I’ve never understood that … you’re surrounded by people cheering you on and often calling you by name (oh, yeah, put your name on the front of your race shirt with marker) and why would you want to zone that out?"

Get ready for one of the most exciting weekends of your life.Good luck, and be sure to check in with me next week!

With that said....
I-CAN'T-WAIT!!!!

10 days away!

Hi Everyone

As I "run" down the final stretch of training I want to just give my warmest, most appreciated, THANK YOU! Everyone who has been following this blog, emailed me with tips, donated, asked your friends to donate, and trained with me...you have in turn made me work harder and put forth the positive energy I need to complete, what will be, my most significant accomplishment to date. Last night we had our last conference call before we depart for New Orleans next week.
All the Virtual Team in Trainer's processed questions, nerves, concerns and walked away with a great excitement for what's to come!!

I have my last "long" run this weekend...it will be 8 miles. This week I have completed 4 miles....6 today and 4 more tomorrow. I will do the 8 on Saturday! I have been keeping tabs on my nutrition even though Valentine's Day Candy is everywhere! I am trying my hardest to stay away so that I conserve every bit of energy. From here on I am vowing to get my 7-8 hours of sleep each night too! Boyfriend gave me a useful tip and I have been drinking Pedialyte each day, on top of my regular water consumption, to restore my electrolytes and stay as hydrated as possible!

I received my TNT singlet in the mail and plan to rock it with pride come race day!! My flight and hotel are booked, New Orleans better be prepared for me!! After all is said and done my ultimate goal is to finish running, i have been less concerned with pace as of late because I find, for me, I am stronger when I start off slowly. I have more endurance, energy and feel a lot better than giving it my all within the first half of the run.

I have been thinking a lot about positive mantras that I can repeat when I feel myself starting to get tired. Mine, so far, include: 'You're well prepared" "I am a strong healthy woman" "STRENGTH, COURAGE, POWER" and lastly "smileeeee and dance to the music"
I believe that if I don't let negative thoughts creep in then I can conquer! I am aware of my energy levels at each mile mark from training so I know when to start implementing these mantras.

I CAN DO IT!!

I have not reached my entire goal yet so please continue to donate to my fundraising efforts as I have been devoting my effort to training for my endurance event that will bring hope to those affected by blood cancers.

http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Happy Running
LP

Tapering feels like heaven...

Hi Everyone - just a quick training update! I have entered the "tapering" phase of training! What is tapering you ask?

"Tapering is just what it sounds like, a gradual decrease in weekly mileage. The purpose is to let your body recover completely from any fatigue or minor injuries that may exist. It also allows your body to build and store glycogen. This is important fuel for your muscles come event day. However the workouts that you still need to do during this time are very important. You still need to stress your body but just not as much as during the buildup period. By the time the event comes around you will be all charged up and ready to go.

It is tempting to want to continue to increase the mileage right up to the event. Do not make this mistake. The taper period is very important to your achieving a successful finish."

I disagree with the last sentence, I am not tempted at all to continue to increase miles - hehe - i am fine with waiting till race day!

With that said, this weekend I have a 15 mile run ahead of me. Luckily, for the sake of my run, upstate NY did not get more than a dusting of snow.

I hope that everyone is enjoying there snows days, if you are so lucky, and if not I hope you all have fabulous Valentine's Day weekends spent with friends, family and loved ones!

I am counting down till the big day and I could not be more excited!!

Please continue to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to wipe out blood cancers and bring hope to those who are touched with it.

http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Happy Running!

LP

The New Orleans Saints!

How fitting!! My apologies!

The past couple of weeks I've been busy with work, training and most importantly birthday celebrations! Mine, my boyfriends and my boyfriend's roommate's! The past 2 weeks have been full of FUN!

Training updates: The past 2 weeks I have been consistent with my weekly miles. Logging about 4 to 5 miles average 3 x per week with my long run and a quick mile or two the day following my long run to keep me loose.

This past weekend I completed my 20 mile run. The longest distance I'll have to complete until my race, which by the way is 21 days away, 21 DAYS!!! I was nervous preparing for it because the previous 18 miles left a lot to be desired.

I hit the pavement early morning because I had a good 4 hours ahead of me. I felt good for the first 10 miles and took a 10 minute break in between to change my clothes. It was a chilly 29 degrees and after the first 10 miles the sweat was making me chilly, hence the change of clothes. I felt fresh heading out on the next time, I refueled during the break with powerbar/powerade (blue) combo - and trailed along. I felt strong and happy, and I think the later of the two feelings is most important. I had a much better week going into my 20 miles in comparison to the 18 miler. But hey...Any Given Sunday, right? I ran all the way to mile 18, where I needed to walk a little because I was frozen and also a little dehydrated as I was envisioning crystal pools of water pouring into my mouth.

I walked about 50 yards, then picked up the pace because IT WAS COLD...and I was hungry, thirsty and tired of running ...I ran all the way to 19.75 miles and walked the last quarter mile. I finished. THRILLED! Chugged some chocolate milk and fell asleep in a matter of minutes, pleased as could be.

The following three weeks consists of the regular weekly miles but instead of increasing the mileage on the long runs I only have to complete a 15 miler and an 8 miler! THEN RACE TIME!

The rest of the weekend was spent surprising boyfriend with a small party for his 25th! Got in touch with a bunch of his friends from school and Saturday night we all got him good! He loved it, and seemed as if he had one of the best nights of his 25 year long existence. I loved seeing him laughing with all his friends, cheesy, but it really makes me happy to see him so happy ...awww :)

This evening we're laying low, Superbowl Sunday in pajama's and dozing off in between plays! Which is fine by me, 20 miles make a girl pretty tired...how am I going to be able to sustain the post-race festivities in NOLA come February 28th!??? I'm rooting for the Saints as I'll be in their lovely home town in 3 weeks and I think it will be very uplifting and an experience to remember to run my first marathon in the town of a first time Superbowl champions!

Winners of my Superbowl Pool for Team in Training will be posted tomorrow!

Til next time...

Happy Running!

LP

So now I'm 26...

Helllooo from the running world!

Yesterday I celebrated my 26th birthday, woof! Just kidding, actually I am completely OK with my age as I feel I've accomplished a lot before the ripe old age of two-six! Received my Master's degree at age 24, ran my first half marathon and received my first promotion at work at age 25 and now my first marathon will be age 26! (Boyfriend got me a scrapbook for my birthday so I can document all of the memories that I have taken away from this Team in Training experience!!)

Two of my younger friends asked me to part some words of wisdom (insert sarcasm here) on them as they approach their 25th birthday in the upcoming week and I told them, for me, 25 was about taking risks and pushing myself. I told them to go the extra step to see what they are made of, in work, in athletics, and in everything else, because the results are usually pleasing. I really did step outside of my comfort zone this past year in terms of self advocacy for work, relationships, friendship and life in general and it made positive waves!

So with that said, bring it 26.... I'm ready for what's next!!

Training this week has been really smooth in comparison to the rough weekend I had. I have been consistent with my miles. Tuesday I ran 5, Wednesday another 5 and this evening I have 4 miles. I have been refocusing on all of my strengths to get me through. I have been training this past week on the treadmill, which i hate because running outdoors is much more enjoyable.

I will close the week with a nice and easy 12 mile run. My friend Ali and I agreed, it feels like a gift only having to run 12 miles this weekend!!

Thank you for all your continued support, i really can't thank you enough...words don't do justice! Therefore my action of thanks is 26.2 miles on February 28th! So close!!

Please continue to support my Team in Training event to raise money to wipe away blood cancers with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Happy Running!
LP

ZUMBA!

Happy Tuesday Everyone! Just updating quickly....after emotionally throwing up on my blog via my last post, I completely forgot to mention about my cross-training that I did last Friday!

My parents have been attending a Zumba class and they made me come with them. I definitely didn't hesitate because I couldn't wait to laugh at my parents participation! If you know my mom and dad, you know what I'm talking about.

I have to say, it was a GREAT time. The music was fast, the instructor was upbeat and it was an hour long dance session...and we all know how I love to dance! I was sore the next day, in a great way. I am not sure if I will go to another class with my parents because towards the end I was laughing more than I was exercising, but I will definitely check one out closer to where I live!

Just a quick reminder to let people know about Superbowl boxes! I'm running a pool for a great cause - and if boxes fill up the halftime winner walks away with $100 bone and the final score winner can walk away with $400!! Get your lucky numbers now!!

email me at Linniep127@hotmail.com for more info!!

Happy Running & Zumba

LP!

"The Green Monster"

Just concluded another long run (18 miles) however today I learned its not always rainbows & butterflies, when it comes to training.

The picture above is my dad, on his bike. I hope his fingers and toes are intact, because hanging out for 3 hours in 27 degree weather, is not fun. So I need to give a big THANK YOU to him for doing this because well he rocks.

I started out great...about 9 miles in 2 hours. My legs felt good, energy level was moderate, I was timing my water and Powerbar breaks perfectly. My new iPhone was kickin' the latest beats on Pandora and it seemed like smooth sailing. I ran today at a bike path in Millertown since I was home for the weekend. My dad bundled up and rode his bike next to me and ahead of me at times to help keep me going...it was all going in my favor.

Around mile 12 I started to reflect on the past week an a half, which wasn't so great for me. Work stress, unsettled relationship stuff and missing out on a dear friend's baby shower, started taking over my positive thoughts and I hit that infamous "runner's wall."

To paint a clearer picture: I felt like a Yankee Fan at Fenway Park...Yanks down by 1, bottom of the 9th, Yankees up at bat, 2 outs, 2 strikes on the count. The last pitch thrown and it's another strike. The Yankees lose but instead of exiting the stadium like normal Yankee Fan's were asked to leave by breaking through the Green Monster. YEA! That bad.

Like any good runner/athlete knows its all about mentality and so like any good runner I tried to think of everything and anything to get me through this blip in training.

I thought of Shelby, my Team In Training honoree. I thought of my Aunt Debby and my friend Rory who just finished his first marathon for Team in Training and the reasons why Rory decided to run. This helped a bit, but it seemed the more I pushed, the harder "the wall" pushed back.

I thought of my dog Juju, who could run for hours upon hours and my friend Gina who also can run for hours upon hours with her dog Maggie. I thought of my friend, Meach, who is also running this marathon in February. She did her 18 solo yesterday and thinking of her pushed me a little harder. I thought of my best friend's and family's positive words of encouragement, but NOTHING was getting me through this wall it seemed!

Dramatic, yes I know, but in addition to not being able to push through I started to get down on myself...not realizing the feat I had just accomplished and only focusing on what I could not accomplish. NOT PRETTY my friends. I decided around mile 16 to walk/jog the rest of the way, because while I wasn't in pain, my legs felt good and my energy level felt OK, something was holding me back. (Maybe I jinxed myself with my previous post about mind games!)

I finished my 18 miles and I was pissed but - hey - that's life and that's what training is all about. Boyfriend said "that's why they call it practice." and he is so right. Tomorrow is another day, and I plan to get up and get right back out there so that in 2 weeks when I have my 20 mile run I can try to learn from my experience today!

SO that's where I stand. This I have learned to be true entirely, it's all mental!

Happy Reading and running, hope you can this can be useful in your day to day routine :)

Mind Games:
Set realistic expectations for yourself, not just about the time it will take to do the race, but other goals, such as even paced miles, or catching people during the second half. Using others to set the pace for you and meeting new people from other states in those early miles are good ways to enjoy many miles. To cope with the pain and fatigue try to cooperate with it, think of it as a part of the training, you have been there before. Talk back to it, make it a partner, and tell it that it can be there, but it can’t slow you down. You are in control.

Redefine pain.
You may want to define it as a feeling you get when your muscles are working hard—a necessary step in the exploration of your potential. Focus on what you can do. Try making it to the next mile marker and reevaluate. Focus on form and pace, I can’t say this enough. This helps reduce fatigue. It is hard to focus on pain when you’re thinking about arms and standing tall. Use mantras to get you through tough times. Songs work well too. Talk yourself through it, after all everyone else is hurting, if they can do it so can I. Make a bargain that when you finish you will rest, soak in the tub, get a massage, but first you must finish. Prepare ahead of time so that when you are there you know what to do.

Superbowl is almost here...

And I decided to run a Suberbowl Box - to get into the football spirit, possibly win some money and to help raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

This is how it will work:

It's $10 a box and 1/2 of the money goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. My friend, Ali, who is also running the New Orleans Rock N' Roll Marathon came to visit this weekend. I got to see some friends down in Albany and on Saturday we went to see Avatar!

I can't do the movie any justice by trying to put my feelings about it into words, because I was speechless for a good hour after viewing. But I will say, "Go see it. Immediately."

Sunday we hit the pavement early and finished 14 miles in 2 hours and 36 minutes! We were so thankful it wasn't too cold! My knees felt good during this run and I attribute it to the lifting I did the past week. I will definitely be keeping up with that.

I have been noticing that I have been so hungry lately. I am unsure if I am taking in enough calories to keep my energy up. As the race is getting closer I will also be increasing my caloric intake with healthy, protein packed foods. During the 14 miles, yesterday, I finished a whole Power Bar and Ali and I split a packet of Sports Beans. They did the trick and I'll continue to use these energy tools for the remainder of my training!

I want to give a big "CONGRATULATIONS!!" to my friend, Rory from High School, who just completed his first marathon, in Arizona, through Team in Training in 3:49:15!!!! SIMPLY AMAZING!! GREAT JOB!

I'm reaching in on the finish line and I need your help to reach my goal. Please continue to support my Team in Training efforts and help raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Happy Running!

LP

26.2 Symptoms of a Runner

I bolded the ones that most apply to me personally!

1. You know how many miles there are in a marathon.
2. Your weekly mileage is how much you run, not your commute to work.
3. You know how many miles you get out of a pair of running shoes.
4. You can convert Kilometers to Miles in your head.
5. You measure your running route in your car to get the exact mileage.
6. When someone tells you their age, you automatically know their
Boston qualifying time.
7. You know Grandma's as the route from Two Harbors to Duluth, not the
person.
8. You can drink; blow your nose and pee on the run.
9. The problem with the treadmill is there's no place to spit.
10. You have less than ten toenails and that's normal for you.
11. Body Glide is your friend.
12. Ibuprofen is affectionately known as "Vitamin I".
13. Navigating dog walkers and baby strollers annoys you because it
interrupts your pace.
14. When you participate in an organized event, you know not to run in
your race t-shirt.
15. You have a favorite energy gel and flavor.
16. The "Picasso" above your fireplace is last year's race poster.
17. You have pre and post race rituals.
18. The journal you keep is in miles and pace not feelings or thoughts.
19. When you look at the weather conditions, you calculate how many
layers to wear.
20. The pride you feel after a good run is worth the pain it took to
get there.
21. You have more t-shirts than you could possibly wear.
22. When you hear the word "bib", you think of race numbers not babies
and Gerber food.
23. The "no carbohydrate diet" does not apply to you.
24. You know that Fartlek is not vulgar terminology.
25. I headed out Saturday morning and completed 12 miles. I couldn't do the last mile because it was SO cold. Around mile 10/11 I had to walk a little to because I was pretty sure my legs had turned into icicles and were going to snap. I did 12 miles in about 2 hours and 10 minutes.
I just received an email from my dad reporting the temperature was supposed to be a little warmer (40's) this week. I kept the stat's book for Skidmore's Womens Basketball! I was made aware they needed some extra help at some of the games since the students are away for break. I was also made aware that I would make $35 dollars a game! I figured this could be a painless way to make some extra fundraising money!

It was really fun to watch the girls hustle up and down the field, it was a tough game and Skidmore was defeated by Williams College, but not by much.

I also received a very helpful email from my friend, Rory, who is also training for his first marathon through Team in Training with some GREAT fundraising ideas. I plan to use them and will update them as they happen!! Thanks Rory!

Training updates:
Its been a slow week back, I went for a 3 mile run on Monday and a 40 minute snow-shoe as well. Tonight I plan to run 4 miles and tomorrow 3 miles. On Saturday morning I will be meeting Team in Training's local chapter for a 7am wake up run - I have to complete 12 miles this weekend. Cross your fingers its not too windy. I'm OK in the cold, but its the wind that makes me want to cry.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. I did everything I hoped for. It was really nice to take a break from running, and now my body is 100% ready to get back into marathon-training gear!

This week I have a 12 mile run ahead of me. I plan to build up with a couple 3 miler's and one 4 then close the week with 12. It is officially freeezing in upstate New York so I plan to do most of January's training indoors. Not thrilled about this but I plan to be the remote control hog at the gym and also find some new fun music to listen to on my Pod. Another plus with the treadmill is I can glance through fashion magazines! (another guilty pleasure of mine)

I have come across my first fundraising let down. I planned to set up a "tip jar" on the treadmill at the YMCA with signs posted about my Team in Training efforts. However, since the YMCA is also a non-profit organization it is against the rules to fund raise for another non-profit in the same establishment. But since I love my little YMCA I don't plan to change locales. I need to start getting more creative with fundraising - ideas very welcome!

Idea's in the making:
- Hosting a Beer Tasting at Saratoga Brewery
- 50/50 Raffle at events I hold
- Selling Mardi Gras Beads at a Superbowl Party/bar
- Wine tasting at my apartment with a small cover charge

Thank you for your continued support and generosity!! Debuting for the Yanks in 1995 and winning Rookie of the Year and helping the Yanks win the World Series in 1996. Jeter is considered on of the best players of his generation.

For Christmas this year my dad (or Santa) got me Jeter's jersey shirt and I wore it to work out today! For some reason wearing #2 helped me push a little harder at the gym. I did some cross training today. 30 minutes on the elliptical, lifted some weights (arms, back and legs) and closed with some ab exercises and the row machine.

It was a solid workout with my dad and I felt really strong after. When I was on the elliptical Jay Z & Alica Key's new song, New York, came on. This is the song that blares throughout Yankee Stadium when Derek strides to home plate to dominate his at bat. It propelled me to hike up the resistance on the elliptical!

So today I want to thank these 3 famous individuals for being a big part of my workout!

Hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas! I'm off from work for the remainder of the week and couldn't be happier. Still no set-in-stone New Years Eve plans but as long as there is dancing I'll be a happy girl!

Please continue to donate to my Team in Training Event! I realized there are certain things I always look forward to during this season and I was wondering about your traditions as well.

Three Things I Love About Christmas

1) Our Christmas tree ornaments tell a story I love this because there are ornaments on the tree from when I was a newborn up till my collegiate soccer career and more.

2) Sitting around the table after Christmas dinner, eating clementines and using the nutcracker to pry open mixed nuts. I love this part because for a long time I was the only grandchild, so there was never a "kids table" and I always got to sit around the adults after dinner and listen to "adult conversations." I still get to do this even though there are lots of little ones now, but now I choose to sit a the "kids table."

3)Mistletoe! This is a long lost favorite that surfaced this year. When I used to live in my old house we always had Mistletoe and I remember kissing my cat, CC, under it sometimes because I loved it so much. This year during our Christmas getaway, Tom and I got to kiss under the mistletoe at the Inn we were staying at. It definitely brought a smile to my face.

What do you love about the Holiday? I hope this year is a special one for everyone. Thank you for your continued support. I need your help to get to my goal donation amount for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Please take time to donate ...
http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

I'm off to get my car washed then hit the pavement with my dad for a run!
Happy Holidays & Running!
LP

The new people I'm meeting!

Through Team in Training I am meeting a lot of very cool people from very cool places! Case in point...a Virtual Team in Training teammate, Kayte, who is running in The Walt Disney Princess Marathon, is a fellow blogger. She is on a mission for Two Thousand and Ten! Check out her blog below!

GO TeaM!

http://runninaround.wordpress.com/2009/12/23/another-celebrity-goodbye-and-a-new-challenge-for-the-blog-world

As for me, I am closing in on my last day of work before an 11 day hiatus! WooooooHOOOOOO!!!! I don't think I've had off 11 days from work since before I was 16 years old! ;) I'm hitting the road to meet a friend for some last minute Christmas shopping then home for holidays!

With all the traveling I'll be doing, I'm anticipating a road block for my training. I am not sure how I'll fit in the 11 and 12 mile runs that I have ahead of me. Since I don't want to feel any pressure during my time off I am going to do what I can. I plan to take it day by day. If that means 5 miles runs everyday instead of long runs and using my rest days as normal, than that's what I'll do. Training is meant to be fun and feeling pressured to fit something in when I could be spending time with my grandma will not make the long run fun for me! Love you Grandma! <3

I hope everyone has a safe, healthy and happy holiday season! We have SO much to be thankful for and I am learning that everyday through this event that I signed up for. I am truly grateful!

Please continue to help donate to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Happy Running
LP!

Course Map!

Here it is...all 26.2 glorious miles that I'll be running in February!!

10 miles and Christmas Songs!

This morning I completed my 10 mile run! I tracked a route around Saratoga so I could take in all the Christmas decorations around town. I ran in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. It was a slow and cold start. It took my body and legs a while to warm up but after mile 3 I was cruising...AND singing aloud to Mariah Carey's Christmas CD! Joy To The World really got me going!

It was the perfect ending to a fabulous weekend spent in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. After the Jingle Bell Run with my dad I got together with my girlfriends for a night out and after all the dancing I was so tired (and sore!) to run on Sunday. I also got to see my friend Ali, who is running in the New Orleans Marathon too!! We saw the movie, The Blindside. IT WAS AWESOME. Stop what you are doing and go see it. So motivational! Then the snow came so a run just wasn't in my future that day. I know, excuses excuses. BUT I got it done on Monday. I went back to my old stompin' ground, The University of Albany...known for their 3 mile Campus Loop, and banged out 3 of em. I completed the 9 miles in roughly an hour and a half ....right on target! I felt good the whole way through. I conserved some energy the first 2 loops (6 miles) so my last loop (3 miles) went very quick, my pace definitely picked up!

I want to continue to send my gratitude to all who have been supporting me with donations, music for my IPOD, running websites and just kind words that let me know you're thinking of me! It's really amazing how it contributes to my effort for this Team in Training event!! Please continue to do so! http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Below is the link to purchase some magazine subscriptions! Great gift ideas for the holidays AND 40% of the total goes to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! So basically every time you read a magazine you purchase through me you are saving a life! Not many people can say that! :)

http://www.magfundraising.com/GroupPage.aspx?gredirection=1&e=1191792

Jingle Bell Bling and Lots Of Hills!

I now have a super cool bracelet with jingle bells on it to add to my purple TEAM bracelet. To the left is a picture from last year's Jingle Bell Run to support The Arthritis Foundation! My dad and I ran last year and this Saturday we'll continue the tradition.

It's a 5k loop around Skidmore College. Last year it was very cold but the sun was shining. This year I hear it will be around 30 degrees and sunny too! It's a pretty, but hilly, route so we're in for a challenge.

My dad, Mr.P, has been my running buddy for awhile. We do the Boilermaker, in Utica NY each year and since I was 7 or 8 we run in our towns Turkey Trot and/or 4th of July Race! Its great to have him support me at each event. When I ran my first half-marathon this summer in Lake Placid, NY, he was there cheering me on each step of the way!

He has been my #1 Fan and a lot of my close friend's #1 Fan as well! Starting from Little League T-ball, to High School and College Soccer. I can't remember a game my dad wasn't at. He is THE BEST supporter an athlete and daughter could ask for! And at 57 years old, the fact that he could still kick my butt in a race too, speaks even more about him!

This weekend I have a 9 mile run to do as well! My Under Armour heat gear will save me this chilly weekend! Thank you again for your continued support!! I woke up this morning to a sunny, winter wonderland!! I hope it keeps coming! :)

This weekend I had my 8 mile run to complete and I was fortunate enough to meet up with Team in Training's local chapter so I didn't have to run solo. I met the group, about 30 people training for all different events, at 7am Saturday morning (before the snow started coming down!) I ran with Coach Meg and also a fellow Team in Trainer, Mike! I completed 8 miles in roughly an hour and 20 minutes. I felt really good up until mile 7, where I started to feel it in my legs. My breathing and energy was fine but my knee started to hurt a little.

What got me through the full 8 miles was the dedication we made in the beginning of the run. Each group run is dedicated to a Team in Training Honoree. This past Saturday's was for Mitchell, a four year old who was just diagnosed with Leukemia. Thinking of Mitchell and the strength he will now need to possess inspired me to pick up the pace and I completed mile 8 in 9 minutes and 52 seconds, surpassing my 10 min mile goal by 8 seconds!

Today Tom and I will be heading to Borders to wrap gifts for tips! All my tips are going straight to my fundraising campaign! I bought us some Santa hats to get in the spirit too!! Really looking forward to a fun day!

Thank you again for all of your support. I was faced with the reality of "Oh my goodness, I'm going to be running a marathon!?"

Questions, concerns, and visualizations of me on a stretcher all crossed my mind! Luckily, I have great coaches and mentors behind me, supporting me throughout this whole journey! This week ends training for week 4 and I'll close the week with an 8 mile run!

While I'm running I try to think of my running form and my pace in order to expend the least amount of energy in order to finish strong. Below are some excerpts from my weekly coach's note that will help me achieve my goal of completing the marathon with a 10-minute mile pace!

"What is pacing? In the context of completing a marathon, pacing means maintaining a uniform speed for the entire distance. It has been shown over decades of competition and studies that the amount of energy expended to cover a certain distance in a certain time is the least when the pace is uniform over the entire distance. Let's say that you want to complete the marathon in 7 hours. You'll exert yourself a lot less if you cover each mile in 16 minutes instead of trying to do the first half at a 15 minute pace and the second half at a 17 minute pace. The amount of extra energy burned up trying to do 15 minutes per mile instead of 16 minutes pace is much more than the energy saved at the slower 17 minutes pace for the second half. It's simple physics."

Haha oh yes...very simple. (insert sarcasm here.)

So with simple physics in mind I have a 10 min/mile pace goal therefore I should hope to finish my marathon in 4:22:11.
Running for 4 hours, 22 minutes and 11 seconds...but hey what's a measly 4 hours compared to a lifetime! (quote from fellow runner, R and also a coworker of mine!)

Gift ideas!

I am starting to branch out with my fundraising ideas! I met K via Facebook and our Team in Training Conference calls and found out she has a running blog as well! Here are some of her reflections from the past 6 months, which i totally agree with, and well, couldn't have said better!

Running is really not all about the legs! I’ve been strength training with a running coach for a while now and at first I was confused why we were only do a few leg exercises. But now I understand the important of a strong core to keep your form, strong shoulder to help propel your arms, and strong lats the help keep you upright, chest out, and lungs open. It’s amazing what training the whole body does for your running!

Too much too fast=disaster

Not stretching before and after runs=OUCH

Hydration is so important! Now more 6+ miles without water for me. With some advice from a marathoning friend I investing in a Nathan water bottle (the one with the hand strap) and it is amazing! I’ve been afraid to buy one of these cause I thought I would hate holding something but honestly it’s design is so awesome…you barely notice you have it!. And its great for people like me that just can’t handle the fuel belts and packs. (Adding the Nathan to my Christmas list!)

I’m not solo runner. I can run on my own for shorter distances but I hate running long distances alone. Yay for TNT group runs! (I'm going to look into my local Team in Training chapter to see if I can join when my runs start getting longer, right now I'm working with Virtual Team in Training)

My body can do so much more than I ever imagined! We don’t give our limbs enough credit.

Sports beans=miracle creation (I've tried the Goo before but I'm going to see if these can work into my training)

The right shoes make all the difference. Having a great stability shoes has done wonders.

Running Blogs are awesome! ( Woo hoo!)

Here is her blog link http://runninaround.wordpress.com/

Check it out and Happy Running!

LP!

Sunday morning training!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, we all have so much to be thankful for! I made my way back to Saratoga last night in order to wake up fresh today to hit the pavement for my 6 mile run. The weather was a bit chillier than usual but I completed 6 miles in 58 minutes and 32 seconds. I'll take it! I felt really good and I attribute it to all the turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie I ate....don't you?

I am approaching week 4 of training already! My health, muscles and emotions all feeling really strong. Since I started running, I have come to learn that this sport is all mental and thinking about positive, motivational events in my life, and others in my life really helped me through my 6 miler today. I have a lot to be thankful for and I also have a great support team behind me.

My Team in Training team is providing nutritional, health and running support since I started and it really amazes me how much it helps!

Thank you again to all those who continue to contribute to my Team in Training event! I ran through Saratoga State Park and all along Broadway. It was a great way to start my Saturday! I ended my Saturday on the dance floor at Tina & Brent's Wedding! It was a stunning event and love was in the air! Congratulations again! :)

This week I will be running in the annual Turkey Trot. Since I was 7 years old, my dad and I have been running in our town's 5k on Thanksgiving morning! Its one of my favorite traditions. After I come home, I pass out on the couch while watching The Thanksgiving Day Parade and wake up just in time for Laurel & Hardy's "March of the Wooden Soldiers"

We will hit the road to Long Island to spend Thanksgiving with my family! I hope to get a run in on Saturday morning with my best friend Gina! Gina runs daily and I know she'll be up for it! Hitting the pavement of SWR will bring back lots of fun memories! I have a 6 miler this weekend which I think will feel GREAT after all the food I plan on eating! If I can't get the run in on Saturday then I'll hit the streets of Saratoga once I get back into town!

I hope all of you have a healthy and happy holiday!! I'm so not a fan of running in the dark, but during the week when I have a quick 3 or 4 mile run I am going to test the waters. I belong to a gym where I can use the treadmill but sometimes the tread hurts my weak knees.
Luckily, where I live there are sidewalks everywhere and it's well lit, however I'm still going to invest in some reflective gear! I used to laugh at Gina when she was telling us about her new reflective vest, but girlfriends got the right idea!

This weekend I'll be traveling to CT for my friend's, Tina & Brent's Wedding!! I will be reunited with all my college girlfriends! I've already rearranged my schedule so that I can include my 5-mile run in on Sunday!

Today is a 'rest day' and I plan to take full advantage, already approaching week 2! They don't leave you to fend for yourself. Not only is training for the marathon crucial to the success I will have participating, but also the fundraising aspect!

Last night we had a team conference call. Team members from all over the US called in to provide support, tips and hints and also just to get to know one another! A fellow teammate let us know that Border's Bookstores allow individuals who are raising money for different charities, help gift wrap for tips! I immediately called up my local Borders to request some times that I could come in and play Elf (Tom thinks I should wear a hat!) in order to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. (LLS)

On December 6th & 7th I will be gift wrapping at my local Borders! Along with my trustee tip jar and my supportive boyfriend, Tom, to lend a helping hand - I hope to accumulate some more fundraising money for LLS!

If you can't make it to Borders here is my link where you can donate!

http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/mardigra10/lpirozzi

Today I have another 3 miler!
Happy Running!
LP

"All those mocha lattes...."

Yesterday was my first "rest" day since I started training. Our coaches and mentors advise team members that on rest days we should cross train (walk, elliptical, bike, etc) or strength train. I chose Pilates! I learned about Pilates my sophomore year of college and stuck with it, on and off, ever since.

Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles. All which I think are crucial to running! Not only does it promote breathing techniques but concentration, control, precision and flexibility too; practices that I will most definitely need for running a marathon!

Today I have a 3 mile run to complete and tomorrow as well. Feeling great approaching the end of my first full week of training!

Thank you for your continued support!!
